The 7th Campus Culture & Arts Festival Opens
The 7th Campus Culture & Arts Festival opened at the Business Plaza on October 10. This year the Festival will include a series of events under the theme of “world culture”, including cuisine competition, promotion video competition, lectures on foreign cultures, photography exhibition, drama shows about famous characters in world literature, and exchange activities for international students. Right after the short opening, the first cuisine competition went up for the Festival. The audience could have a taste of special delicacies from different countries, like Thai cashew chicken and sticky rice balls, Vietnamese spring rolls and Spanish paella. The French cuisine team, “La ausine folle”, joined by French teacher Ms Maud, attracted special attention when the team members made authentic French crepes with chocolate mousse according Ms. Maud’s instruction.
Pan Manlin at “APEC Voices of the Future 2013” in Indonesia
October 7-8, the 21st informal economic leader’s meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) was held in Bali, Indonesia. As one of the five Chinese representatives, SCBC student Pan Manlin and other youth delegates from Asia-pacific countries will take part in a series of activities of the 7-day “APEC Voices of the Future 2013” program. They will have the opportunity to personally listen to the insights of various global leaders and entrepreneurs. Moreover, “Youth Declaration”, written together by all the youth delegates, was thought highly of by Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
English Space Time: Let’s Learn How to Sell New Products
Organized by the Department of College English, a new section of English Space Time was held in Room F304 on October 8. Hosted by foreign teacher Ben, this section focused on how to sell new products to global customers. In his presentation, Ben explained the five Ps in marketing: Price, Place, Product, Packaging, and Promotion. For example, to sell dim sum to French people, you need to take into consideration the French culture and their different dietary habits when packaging the new products.
SCBC English Majors Achieve High Pass Rates at TEM 4
The recently-released results of Test for English Majors Band 4(TEM 4) showed that the overall pass rate for SCBC’s English majors who took the test at their first attempt was 53.13%, 17.55 and 1.76 percentages more than the averages for independent colleges and public institutions of higher education respectively; for the students on their second try, 68.92% of them had succeeded, with 30.2 and 27.61 percentages higher in pass rates respectively. This is the third consecutive year that SCBC students have achieved better results at TEM 4 than national averages for the two categories of institutions in China.
SCBC’s First Participation in Turkish Exchange Program
Recently, Ms. Hu Hongling, a teacher from the Department of English Language and Culture, and two students from the Department of International Business Management, Deng Peixiang and Luo Feiyan, had flown to Celal Bayar University at Manisa, Turkey for the Mevlana Exchange Programme. As SCBC’s first participants at the Programme and the first exchange guests from China for the University, Ms. Hu will lecture in a two-week course about Chinese culture, and the two students will stay for two semesters (eight months) as exchange students to study International Relations at the University.
SCBC Students Win Third Prize at “FLTRP CUP” National English Debating Competition (South China)
Zhong Ziyun and Chen Jiaying, two SCBC students of Grade 2012, respectively from the Department of Information Technology and the Department of Finance, were awarded the Third Prize at the 17th “FLTRP CUP” National English Debating Competition (South China) held at South China Agricultural University on September 27-29. “The British Parliamentary format of the competition” requires the contestants to be outstanding not only in public speaking, but also in language proficiency and logical thinking. Competing with debaters from other colleges and universities, the two SCBC representatives were calm and energetic on the stage. Their solid language foundation and the ability to respond quickly and flexibly exhibited in the competition had earned favorable evaluation from the judges.
