Three Black Swans Settle Down at SCBC
As a gift from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, three black swans, two female and one male, arrived at SCBC on September 28 and settled down on the lake near the Business Plaza. To provide for these precious creatures, SCBC has built a cabin for rest and arranged a keeper to take care of them.
Students Work as Simultaneous Interpreters at Department Meetings
On September 26, six students from the Innovative Simultaneous Interpreting Class of the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures worked as simultaneous interpreters at the Japanese language teaching section meeting held in Room F201. The working language for the meeting was Japanese only. Apart from all the teachers, foreign teachers, student advisors and administrative staff for Japanese language major, Ms. Kaneko Mayumi, a scholar from College of Business and Communication in Japan who is currently in a 12-day short-term exchange at SCBC, was also invited to the meeting.
This meeting was both an innovative tryout for teaching section meetings and a new opportunity for students to learn through practice. It has set up two trends for future work of the Department: first, the working language for meetings of different language teaching sections should be the corresponding foreign language; second, students are thus provided with the opportunity to improve their interpreting skills by working as simultaneous interpreters for such meetings.
English-Only Talk: Learn How to Love Yourself
Organized by the Department of College English, the first English-Only Talk featured with “Learn How to Love Yourself” was held in Room C302 on September 25. After an introduction to the topic by a lovely English song, the speaker, Thelema Rose, explained to the audience the reasons and meaning of loving yourself by citing examples in daily life. Her talk consisted of four parts: “what is love”, “how should you love yourself”, “the meaning of loving yourself” and “the ways to love yourself”.
“English Corner” Takes on A New Look
On the evening of September 25, the first activity of this semester’s “English Corner” was held at the beautiful garden between Teaching Buildings F and G. The theme for the occasion was “Beauty Is Skin Deep”. Several foreign teachers were invited to the occasion, including Kevin, Rose, John and Nilo. What is new about this year’s “English Corner” is the Speech Section, in which the participants are able to practice their speaking skills in a relaxed setting and receive on-the-spot feedbacks from foreign teachers for improvement.
SCBC’s First Student Exchange at UCSD
Zhang Xuyan and Tang Shiyun respectively from the Department of Finance and the Department of International Business Management lately arrived at University of California, Sand Diego and started their one-year study there. This is the first time that SCBC has sent students to UCSD. To support their study in the U.S., SCBC has given each of the two students an amount of 65,000Yuan in funding.
Ms. Lin Baoling Wins Third Prize at National College English Teaching Design Competition
Recently, Professor Zhang Hengzhen, head of the Department of College English at SCBC, Ms. Lin Baoling, a teacher from this Department, attended the 4th National Symposium of College English Teaching in Universities of Foreign Language Studies held at Xi’an International Studies University. Other representatives present at the Symposium were those from famous institutions of higher learning in China, such as Nanjing University, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Beijing International Studies University, etc.
The arrangement for the symposium included lectures by experts and scholars on foreign language teaching and group discussions about the reform and innovation of teaching principles, contents, and methods in college English teaching. Ms. Lin, thanks to her outstanding performance, won a third prize at the Teaching Design Competition held by the Symposium.
