 Pan Manlin Ranks Top 4 in “2013 APEC Voice of the Future” National Selection Final

 
   Pan Manlin, an undergraduate student from SCBC, was named the 3rd runner-up in the “2013 APEC Voice of the Future” Selection Final lately held in Beijing. Her competitors in the selection final were the other eleven finalists, who were undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students from the most prestigious universities in China like Peking University. Together with other four winners in the top 5, Pan will represent China to attend a series of activities organized by APEC Summit in October in Bali, Indonesia. 
 
 
 
SCBC’s First Participation in EU Research Project
 
   Recently, Ms. Pu Ping, a teacher, from the Department of English Language and Culture, has set off to Estonia for a Marie Curie-IRSES project launched at Tallinn University. As the first teacher from SCBC to participate in overseas research activities, Ms. Pu will work with other researchers from seven countries for four months to implement a project entitled “Imagining Development: A multidisciplinary and multilevel analysis of development policies and their effect in the post-socialist world”. As part of her research activities, she will deliver a seminar and a workshop during this period, and produce afterwards a paper or other publications for the results of research.  
 
 
 
SCBC Sets Record JLPT Pass Rate 
 
   The students of Japanese major from SCBC has set a new record pass rate at the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) as results of latest test this year were delivered. Students of Grade 2010, who took Level I of the test—the highest level and most difficult Japanese proficiency test in the world, had achieved a pass rage of 39%, about 10% more than the national average pass rate. Meanwhile, students of Grade 2011 had set their pass rate at JLPT Level II at 67%. Notably, the pass rate for Class One of Grade 2011 was high up to 83.9%, and Chen Qingfei even got a full mark of 180 in the test.  
 
 
Prof. Ton Winter from NHL University in Holland Visits SCBC
 
   On September 5, a delegation led by Prof. Ton Winter from NHL University in Holland paid a visit to SCBC. The two sides had an in-depth discussion on the situation of “China-EU Management Innovation Plan” in China today. This May, SCBC sent ten students to join the 2013 Management Innovation Plan at the International School of Law and Business, Vilnius in the Republic of Lithuania. The Management Innovation Plan is a project under European Commission’s ERASMUS Student Mobility for Placements that enables students at higher education institutions worldwide to have short-term exchanges or to spend a placement period in an organization or enterprise in EU countries.  
 
 
 
Dr. Jeffrey John Gosper from CSU Study Center Visits SCBC
 
   On September 12, Dr. Jeffrey John Gosper, academic director at Sydney Study Center of Charles Sturt University (CSU), and his colleges visited SCBC. In the meeting, Vice President Lai Zhili welcomed the guests and shared his recent trip to Australia with them. In particular, he was very much impressed by the excellent faculty and the sophisticated equipment of CSU Study Center, and thought its practice-oriented philosophy of education especially applaudable. Dr. Gosper said Charles Sturt University actually has a long history of engagement in both professional and academic education. Later, the two sides exchanged ideas on the feasibility of “3.5+1.5” Pre-Masters program and signed related agreements on exchange and cooperation. 
 
 


Scholars from Japan Give Talks at SCBC
 
   On September 12, teachers and students from the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures met two guests from Japan, Prof. Saegusa Tamotsu from Shinshu University and Mr. Yamanishi Tsubasa from Nagoya University, who then gave lectures in Lecture Hall F101, entitled respectively “Child Abuse in the Context of Criminal Law in Japan” and “Japanese Culture around Us”. 
   



Japanese Teacher from CBC in Japan Lectures at SCBC
 
   Ms. Kaneko Mayumi, a teacher from College of Business and Communication (CBC) in Japan, started her 12-day short-term exchange at SCBC on September 16. During her stay, she will be working a series of teaching and exchange activities, including giving lectures on Interview for Japanese Enterprise, Chado (Japanese Tea Ceremony), Ikebana (Japanese Flower Arrangement), Wafuku (Japanese Clothing), Aikido (Japanese Martial Art) and delivering teaching seminars to SCBC teachers. 
   
 


Mid-Autumn Festival Party Held for Foreign Teachers
 
   A tea party for foreign teachers was held at SCBC’s Faculty Club on September 17 to celebrate the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival in China. Fourteen foreign teachers from America, Canada, Britain, France, Germany, Spain, Japan, South Korea and the Philippines at the party were all enjoying the occasion, excitedly sharing their experiences and ideas about this traditional Chinese festival. Faith and Alvaro gave wonderful speeches to the group, and Nilo, who spoke a little Chinese, sang a Chinese song “The Moon Knows My Heart” as a tribute to the Festival. A student, on behalf of all the students at SCBC, sang an interesting foreign folk song for the foreign teachers to thank them for their work at SCBC. 
 


 
Deputy Director from Kyoshin Language Academy Visits SCBC
 
   On September 18, Mr. Chen Junlin, deputy director of Kyoshin Language Academy in Japan visited SCBC. In the meeting with Vice President Lai Zhili, the guest introduced the Academy, especially the “Pre-masters training courses”. Thanks to such courses, the Academy has achieved a marked increase in promotion rate to post-graduate studies. The two sides then discussed the possibility of cooperation in offering “Pre-Masters class” for SCBC students. 
 
 


Parade and Ceremony Held to Conclude 2013 Freshmen Military Drill
 
   On September 18, the parade for 2013 freshmen military drill with awarding ceremony was held at the track and field stadium of SCBC. Accompanied by the Chief Military Training Instructor, President Xu Zhenhua reviewed the 12 array phalanxes from eight departments. The freshmen, all in high spirits, shouted out resounding, inspiring slogans together as they marched forward across the rostrum and saluted to the leadership. After the ceremony, the freshmen displayed the achievements of their training with splendid performance, including arresting boxing, dagger exercise, female defense, gymnastic exercises.
