SCBC Model United Nations Conference
Sponsored by the Department of European Languages and Cultures, the 3rd Simulated United Nations Conference was held on May 9, where students representing 11 countries discussed international issues in a simulated section of UN International Conference. The theme of “global warming” was chosen for this year’s event to draw attention to the energy and climate problems that have concerned a lot of people in recent years. The participants took on roles as diplomats from their representing countries to speak, move, negotiate and vote in the conference.
English Dubbing Contest: A Feast of Voice Images
On May 9, the 5th English Dubbing Contest sponsored by the Department of English Language and Culture was held at Room C402. The contestants competed to win the game by showcasing their English competence and improvisation in “Innovative Dubbing” and “Impromptu Dubbing”. For “Innovative Dubbing”, the segment of film for dubbing was chosen by the contestants themselves; while for “Impromptu Dubbing”, they had to dub a segment randomly picked for them.
S Korean Professor Talks on Chinese Characters in Northeast Asian Languages
Song Min, an honorary professor from Kookmin University in South Korea, delivered a Korean lecture entitled “Communication in Chinese Characters among Northeast Asian Countries in the Era of Modernization”. In the lecture, Song explained the relations between Chinese characters and kanji in Japanese, and hanja in Korean.
French, Japanese & Korean Students Experience Chinese Culture
Recently, five students from France, Japan and South Korea have taken on a ten-period-of-hour course of Chinese culture at SCBC. In this four-day course, they will enjoy a journey of Chinese cultural experiences in various ways, including appreciation of Chinese movies and songs, intercultural communication, and appreciation of Chinese poetry and calligraphy. Notably, these five foreign students were able to role-play as teachers and introduce respectively their own cultures to other students in the class.
SCBC Teachers of Korean Language Attend International Conference
On May 11 and 12, all the teachers of the Korean Studies Section at SCBC went to Guangdong University of Foreign Studies to attend the International Conference 2013 of China Korean Language Teaching and Research Association, where the attendants were engaged in the discussion of academic issues of Korean language and the problems of Korean language teaching. At the conference, Ms. Chi Shengnü, head of the Section, read a paper entitled “An Analysis of Chinese Characters ‘Jing Ying’ (经营) in the Proverbial Interpretation of Du’s Poetry”, which was applauded by many experts in the field. Present at the conference were more than 100 scholars and experts from over 30 universities, including Seoul National University and Ewha Woman’s University in South Korea, and Beijing University and Fudan University in China.
Free Bus from SCBC to the Local Food Market
At 8:10 on May 10, the first free bus was departing the North Gate of SCBC for the Food Market of Bai Sha Village. The free bus is scheduled to go at 8:10 at North Gate and return at 9:10 from the Food Market every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. (No free bus available during holidays)
English-Only Talk: Enjoy Your Life
Sponsored by the Department of College English, an English-only talk entitled “Life” was given by Robert, a foreign teacher of SCBC, at room C302 on May 14. In his talk, Robert shared with the students his understanding of how to experience and enjoy every bit of life. With his own stories as a dreamer, he suggested that students should try to have a clear goal of life and strive for it. Moreover, he emphasized the importance of knowledge and encouraged them to make life more meaningful with rich knowledge.
SCBC Graduates Information on The South China Business Journal of AmCham South China
Recently, SCBC graduates information has been published on The South China Business Journal, a monthly publication of AmCham South China, with the hope that a broader platform for employment will be in place to provide SCBC students with more resources, particularly better access to foreign-invested enterprises, in the employment market. In 2013, SCBC has renewed its membership with AmCham South China thanks to a virtuous cooperation since its first entry in 2012.
The 4th Japanese, Korean & Arabic Dubbing Contest: My Voice, My Show
Sponsored by the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures, the final round of the 4th Japanese, Korean & Arabic Dubbing Contest was held at Room F101 on May 15. In the competition, the 16 teams of contestants first gave an introduction in respective foreign languages and then competed in the dubbing of chosen film segments. The films screened in this contest were cartoon animations, movies and TV series from different countries. In order to win the competition, the contestants were trying their best to represent the personality and emotions of the characters in the scene through their voice. Their excellent performances had brought the audience to rounds of laughters and applauses.
